RIMC is an inter-services institution and a category 'A' establishment of the Ministry of Defence. The College was established in 1922 with the primary aim of preparing the boys for entry into defence services and to provide quality all-round education to young boys.

Boys of age not less than 11½ years and not exceeding 13 years either studying in Class VII or passed are eligible for the entrance examination.

Prospectus and application form can be obtained from RIMC, Dehradun by sending a demand draft of Rs. 250/- in favour of Commandant, RIMC Dehradun payable at SBI, Tel Bhavan (Code 1576). These are dispatched by registered post or courier.

Completed application forms are to be submitted to this centre normally by 30 March for the examination held in June and by 29 September for the examination held in December or as declared by RIMC.

Written Entrance Examinations are held biannually on 1 & 2 June and 1 & 2 December. It consists of three papers, English, Mathematics and General Knowledge.

Viva-voce (interview) is held only for those who qualify in the written examination and the date of interview is intimated to them. Intelligence and personality of the candidates is tested in the interview.

Candidates selected after interview undergo a medical examination at selected military hospitals.
